This list assumes the reader is already familiar with "main-stream" media outlets such as New York Times, BBC, ABC, CNN or Washington Post, as well as newswires such as Agence France Presse (AFP), Associated Press (AP) or Reuters. Most the following resources contain news analysis. This work in progress is divided into three sections: U.S. Politics/Culture, Muslim news, World/Middle East news. An attempt has been made to ensure that the sites listed here do not require a paid subscription. All sites are in English.

American News, Politics and Culture:


Antiracism Net:
A subsidiary of IGC (Institute for Global Communications). They also run Peace Net, Women's Net and Eco Net. Includes news reports and press releases documenting racism and oppression particularly in the United States. Selection of articles pertinent to the subject from a variety of sources (NYTimes, ACLU, Civilrights.org, etc).

Black Electorate:
News and culture for the black community, published by Nation of Islam member Cedric Muhammad.

Black Press USA:
Independent news source reporting on the African American community.

Capitol Hill Blue:
Political commentary with an independent, "non-partisan" slant, though seems to lean to the right. Appeals to longstanding American tradition of suspicion of big government.

Common Dreams:
Source of alternative news and analysis, extensive lists of links of alternative news sites. "Common Dreams is a national non-profit citizens' organization working to bring progressive Americans together to promote progressive visions for America's future."

Corporation Watch:
Site devoted to monitoring how big business corrupts politics. Updated weekly with analysis pieces.

Counterpunch:
A leftist bi-weekly "muckraking" newsletter with "all the right enemies. Edited by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair.

Cybercast News Service:
Founded by Media Research Center and L. Brent Bozell to counteract a supposed liberal bias in mainstream media. The "Media Links" section contains a good list of other conservative news sources.

Institute for Public Accuracy:
The IPA seeks to "broaden public discourse" and include "perspectives that widen the bounds of media discussion and enhance democratic debate."
